Foco 2026: Rodrigo García
We take a fresh look at the work of those who have played a vital role in the history of La Casa Encendida and in Madrid’s cultural landscape. On this occasion, we are celebrating Rodrigo García’s 40-year career as a playwright and director in Spain.
Etymologically speaking, the term ‘foco’ refers to the place — whether real or symbolic — where something reaches its greatest concentration and from which its influence radiates. Building on this idea, the Foco project is conceived as a space for reviewing, studying and highlighting the creators who have played a significant role in the history of La Casa Encendida and in the cultural ecosystem of the city of Madrid.
The project offers an analysis of works and creative processes with the aim of broadening our understanding of them and sharing this knowledge with the public. Through this approach, the public is invited to explore both established bodies of work and new pieces and recent productions by the participating artists.
This third edition is dedicated to Rodrigo Garcia (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1964), a Spanish-Argentine writer, director of contemporary theatre, playwright and set designer. He has lived in Spain since 1986, where he began his theatre career. He founded the theatre company La Carnicería Teatro in Madrid in 1989. He has collaborated with, amongst other institutions and festivals, the National Drama Centre (Spain), the Avignon Festival and the Venice Biennale. In 2009, he received the Europa Nueva Realidad Teatral Award. Between 2014 and 2017, he directed the Centre Dramatique National (CDN) in Montpellier (France), which he renamed ‘Humain trop humain’ (All Too Human).
Throughout the year, Foco unfolds through a programme which, in this edition, includes ‘Hágalo usted mismo’ – a video screening with live music – and ‘Hamlet está fatal ’ – a video installation based on Shakespeare’s play, starring children and teenagers, which will include a photographic installation; LAS CHICAS (Onna no ko-joshi) – a sound piece featuring a selection of excerpts from Rodrigo García’s forthcoming book; and 'Están jodidos / Dicen que se alegran' – a preview of the initial stage of work on his next creation. We’ll also be able to see the video installation 'Los dos problemas fundamentales de la ética', and we’ll bring this *Foco* programme to a close with the publication of a book on his work, in collaboration with La Casa Encendida and the publisher Caniche.
